I hate the fact that I have to figure this out for every new distro I use. But here it goes for Xubuntu. Tested and working in 14.04 LTS.


1. Open the file /etc/systemd/logind.conf
2. Find the line "HandleLidSwitch="
3. Set it like "HandleLidSwitch=ignore" and if it has a "#" (hash" in front of it, remove it.

Save and reboot and you are good. :)

Assigning to a variable from a pipe in Z Shell

Unfortunately or sadly, this could not be done by me for my use case in Bash. Im looking for a good solution in Bash too. Just to note here. To read from the pipe you just have to use the Read command. It only works this way in Zsh so far.

Change FAT NTFS file attributes from Linux

The original use case was born for me when one of my friends gave me a memory card that was infected by the hidden file virus (he calls it so). All of the files were applied the +S +H +R attributes which made the file System file, Hidden and Read only respectively. For this reason he could not see them in his cell phone which depended on this attributes (Nokia Symbian OS).
I personally dont like to work with Microsoft born tools, so instead of booting into my Windows 7 installation (I usually never do that), I wanted to find a way that allowed me to change these attributes right from my Linux installation. There it came, the awesome mtools toolset.

To change the file attributes, you first need to switch into that directory (which points to the card). But the mtools have a catch. They do not let you work with them, unless you ignore some errors. And to instruct it to do so, you have to make an RC file that will do just that right before one of tools takes any actions. The location of the RC file will be


~/.mtoolsrc


/home/<user>/.mtoolsrc

The contents have to be


drive s: file="/dev/<your-usb-drive>"
mtools_skip_check=1

The significance of the first line is, it assigns the directory into drive S. it could be anything else, like C, D, E etc. The second line tells mtools to check for some errors, it has to be set to not check because otherwise it refuses to operate on the drive (please dont look at me, I just copied it from somewhere)
Then change into your drive


$ mattrib -/ s:

And change the attributes (actually unset them) for all the files


$ mattrib -/ -h -s -r s:

So, this week I saw a blog post somewhere where the poster claimed that if you cant solve the mentioned 5 problems each in under and hour, you aint no programmer, dev or software engineer. So, I went in and read the problems. 1-4 were easy but number 5 got me a worrying a little. And expected, I failed to solve that in under 1 hour yesterday. But today morning I solved that in less than 30 minutes. But whatever, I cant call myself a programmer anymore :(
Heres my approach though, using recursion:
Each i (from 1 through 9) has 2 different ways of connecting to the sequence.
1. Add itself to the closest sum (1 + 23 + 4 + .......)
2. Or concatenate itself (1 + 234 + ......)
So if we either add an i to the sequence that has reached it or we concatenate. Examples: .......8 + 9

Now the part before 8 has the same behavior with 8
.......7 + 8
.......78
This goes all the way back to 1 and 2

When you cant log into Postgresql from Web Interface Adminer etc

I ran into this problem earlier this week and left it until today, when I needed it work at all cost. Turns out it was a simple issue with the configuration file. Heres the process.

First of all, open the file /etc/postgresql/9.1/main/pg_hba.conf
Find the line : "local" is for Unix domain socket connections only
Below that line there is a line like this: local all all md5
Just change the last value to: peer
So the line now looks like: local all all peer
Now save the file (you need to be root)
Then restart the Postgresql process using the command: sudo service postgresql restart
Done.
