Who says that running is the only way to lose weight? Can’t find the time to run? Why not walk?

Walking still is a form of exercise that will allow you to lose weight. Depending on the person and the amount of energy you use while walking, will depend on the amount of calories you will burn.

A general rule is that for every mile a person who weighs 160 pounds walks, they lose 100 calories. That’s not a lot of calories but it is losing weight with not a lot of effort.

- Even though walking to lose weight is not a preferred method, it is better than no activity at all. You’d have to walk a long way to see any major changes. But say you’ve had too much to eat and want to burn off some calories, then walking is a good way to achieve that.

If you live within a few miles of where you work, then you could walk to work instead of driving. Or instead of parking your vehicle right next the entrance, park a few blocks down and walk to your destination.

Walking with a group is also beneficial to all you walkers out there. Research shows that you can walk a further distance if you have people to walk with. People who walk in groups can verify that. Anytime you see “mall walkers” they’re talking and walking. But it seems that process last for hours! So not only are you enjoying catching up with friends, you’re also burning calories.

Walking can be therapeutic to the soul. Being able to enjoy nice weather and getting in tune with nature and your thoughts can go a long way with stress and overall happiness. If you haven’t taken a walk lately I encourage you to do so. It may be just what the doctor ordered.

Remember: Walking is better than sitting at home doing nothing about your health. Burning some calories is better than burn NO calories.

So the next time you think about it, take a walk! Park down the street and walk to your favorite hangout. Or find a group of friends to walk with you. Have fun with it. Enjoy the fresh air and enjoy the company of others around you! It may be just what you need to point you in the right direction.
